We had our annual holiday pictues taken on Wednesday night. I just wanted to share a cute one from the photo session.

Learn and Play Experience

Well I have come to the end of my Learn and Play experience. I must admit it was not as evil as I thought it would be. However, most things are not as evil as I originally think they are going to be. Delicious was probably my favorite activity and something I will continue to use in my personal life. Some of the other activities were things I already use on a regular basis (YouTube and Flickr). I will need to dabble with Wikis a little more before I pass judgement on this new tool.

I just want to thank many of my coworkers, especially Christin Overly and Gina Finley, for helping me complete this assignment and keeping me from pulling out all of my hair. This activity really helped bring out the best in Team Karl.

MOLDI Searching

Well I did some searching on MOLDI this afternoon for the first time. It must be growing in popularity, because I had to place holds on the titles I was interested in. I am happy though that titles can now be downloaded to Ipods. I am all about the Ipod. Hopefully my request for Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned by Walter Mosley will be returned "digitally" soon.

Obama Podcasting

I used the Google Podcast Directory and started searching for podcasts of President-elect Obama. Within EveryPodcast.com, I found the Official Barack Obama Audio Podcast. I subscribed through my Bloglines account and listened to his election night speech again. It is good to be a Democrat. ;-)

I have an Ipod at home and I have noticed from time to time free podcasts from professors at Ohio State. I thought that was just great. Now if they had only had that when I was in school.

YouTube

I love YouTube and I look at it almost everyday. Since I am a political humor junkie, I could not help posting this video that mashes Sarah Palin and Miss South Carolina. ;-)

It should frighten people that I am using Power Tools

Since I ordered MAKE magazine for the branch for 2009, I was happy to see MAKE as a Power Tool that we could use for Learn and Play. You could say I lack the handy man skills. Many of the projects seemed a little too difficult for me. However, the Magnetic Wall Chess board might be something I could do. Before I dedicate wall space to the game board, I probably should learn how to play chess first.

The forum part of the MAKE Power Tool was pretty cool. Somebody came across several large burlap bags and wanted to find things to do with them. If they looked at my stickie note from an earlier posting, they might decide to use them for that. Just kidding. CML does not endorse any of the expressed views of this blogger. ;-)

A good web page for the holidays

One of the things I really enjoyed on Web 2.0 was cocktailbuilder.com. Sometimes when the family comes over for the holidays, a good stiff drink is needed to maintain your sanity. With this web page, you can just pug in the ingredients you have on hand and make your drink. No need to run out to one of those all night liquor stores on a holiday. ;-)

Urbanspoon was pretty cool too, however, some of the restaurants listed are no longer in busy. It would be good to call ahead before you head out for your dining experience.

I am not sure if this was what the goal of this Learn and Play thing was, but I liked it.

GoogleDocs

I was able to play with GoogleDocs this afternoon and for a moment I thought I was using Microsoft Word. It was great to save documents in various formats, especially the formats that we do not have on our internet computers.

Thank you to the Learn and Play Gurus, I am in the sandbox

Thanks to Gerald 2.0 and Joy in Digital Services, I am in the sandbox. According to Gerald 2.0, I must have been the impatient child who could not wait for permission for things. Maybe my daughter is rubbing off on me.

Anyway, I have added this blog to the favorites. Now my coworkers can take a look at all of my Deep Thoughts regarding Learn and Play. ;-)

Wikis can be used for good!

I was worried about wikis before I started on Learn and Play Thing #15. I was under the impression that Wikipedia was evil and that we should not trust it as a source. Although I have to admit I have used it a few times to help customers (Only as a starting point!) with their reference questions. I like the option of creating wikis that can be exclusive to a work group. I was not too impressed with the ones linked to this Learn and Play option, however, I could see great uses for wikis at CML. For example, how about some additional Reader's Advisory wikis?

Sometimes I feel like I am Library 1.5

I have to admit that I am thrilled with the possibilities of Library 2.0. However, we need to remember that we need to be in the middle, say Library 1.5, to help more of our customers. I am happy to be one of the technology trainers for the system. The classes that we offer are for customers who still reside in a Library 1.0 world. If we can make them more comfortable with the idea of a Library 2.0 world, we have taken a major step to helping them get back on track on the information superhighway.

One of the ideas I liked from the Michael Stephens posting was the "Librarian 2.0 is a trendspotter". Now that we have adopted a floor model instead of a desk model for our staff, we can have those "honest, human conversations" with our customers. If you see something new that a customer is working on, just ask them about it. Sometimes customers enjoy being able to teach the librarians a thing or two, especially the teenagers. ;-)

delicious.com

Delicious.com has to be my favorite activity so far on Learn and Play. I like to search many different web pages for genealogy information and I can only access my Favorites list from home. This will definitely be a web page I use at work and at home. My delicious page is http://delicious.com/cmlbuckeyedad

Twitter

I created my account on Twitter and added myself as a follower to Learn and Play. I need to add some additional subscribers to my Twitter page. Here is my account name: https://twitter.com/cmlbuckeyedad

I might try to use Twitter at home while watching CNN. Rick Sanchez follows the message boards during his live broadcast at 3 P.M. Eastern.

LibraryThing.com

I created an account on LibraryThing.com this morning. I think I might post titles in my account that I have really enjoyed myself or reading to my daughter. That would explain why a Dean Koontz novel and The Tale of Despereaux are on the same list.

This is what happens when the get your Criminology Degree and work for the library

The playful and twisted side of my sense of humor came out when creating a superstickie note for item #10 on Learn and Play. It is a mix of The Godfather and Dexter. ;-)

Political Humor RSS Subscriptions

My friends, where do you for your political humor? You betcha I go to Comedy Central. I will get back to ya if I find anything else. I added RSS subscriptions to The Daily Show Videos and The Colbert Report Videos to my Bloglines account. Please add any other suggestions to my blog. I will put them through my vetting process. ;-)

New Found Determination

Thanks to my own little Supergirl, I am going to continue on with Learn and Play without incarceration or termination. I decided to feed my political and sports news addictions by creating a Bloglines account and adding CNN and CNNSI to my subscription list.

Well it should be apparent I have not become a blogging addict...

As I struggle to finish my 23 Things, I have realized that I am not a blogger. Working part time and spending over 85% of my time on the floor assisting customers, it is extremely difficult to finish reading my email and completing my other off floor tasks. I wish I had more time to Learn and Play, however, I just do not see it happening in the near future.

As far as anything technology related, I love my iPod. I love downloading music and building my digital music library.

Ugh!

As I fall further and further behind on Learn and Play, I am starting to pull my hair out. I might just end up like Homer!

Script Ohio

True Buckeyes cannot help getting goosebumps seeing the band come out of the tunnel. This picture was posted on Flickr by someone who had better seats me at the Youngstown State game on August 30, 2008

Hello CML

Welcome to my first blog! After I "Learn and Play" some more, I might become a blogging addict. ;-)
